2025

2024 had many highlights for the Ecohydraulics community like ISE in Quebec or the new metrics of the Ecohydraulics Journal with an ever increasing number of high-quality articles. Thanks to everyone contributing – the LOC in Quebec, conference attendees, Ecohydraulics Authors, and the many people who keep the community vibrant. Importantly, there is the Early Careers on Ecohydraulics Network (ECoENet), which has grown substantially with ISE, features interesting interviews, just redesigned its own website, and much, much more. Congratulations on these developments — early career scientists will find many opportunities by joining and subscribing to their newsletter, the “ECoENetter“.

2024 also paved the way for future gatherings at the ISE 2026 in Lausanne, Switzerland, and by calling for an LOC to host ISE 2028 — stay tuned!

What’s in store for 2025? I guess we don’t know for sure yet, but there’s no shortage of opportunities to get together: From March 30 to April 3, 2025, the Joint Committee on Fisheries Engineering and Science (EWRI/ASCE/AFS) will hold its International Fish Passage Conference in China, near Three Gorges Dam.

From June 22-27, 2025, IAHR will hold its World Congress in Singapore, with a very broad range of topics. So this is a great opportunity to connect with hydraulicists beyond the “eco”.

Now, there are also challenges that provide us with a wide range of research topics. How do you approach challenges like climate change?
Freakonomics did a compelling show on how Wizards and Prophets are trying to save the planet (listen to it). So, Ecohydraulicists, are you Wizards or Prophets? Please fill out this poll.

The survey will remain open until at least the end of January, provided there are at least 100 participants. If we fall short of that number, you may notice a few more reminders on social media throughout the year to encourage participation. Just kidding. Do you.

Finally, I look forward to another year of continued growth in our thriving community, full of new research, collaborations, conferences, webinars, meetups – or just creative spaces where ideas can flourish. Best wishes for a prosperous and fulfilling New Year!
