Privacy & Cookies

How this website handles your data, storage, and cookies.

This website is a static, community-run site. We do not run advertising, and we do not use analytics or tracking cookies. We try to keep data collection to the minimum needed to make the site work.

Strictly necessary storage

To function, the site stores a few small preferences in your browser’s local storage on your device. These are not transmitted to any server and are not used to track you:

  • your theme / display settings (e.g. light or dark mode);
  • your chosen wallpaper / banner preference;
  • whether you have dismissed the announcement banner;
  • your cookie-consent choice (so we don’t ask again on every page).

Because these are strictly necessary or set at your own request, they do not require consent.

Two optional features contact third-party services, so they load only if you choose “Accept all” in the cookie banner. You can decline them with “Reject optional” and the site will work normally.

  • On-page translation. If enabled, the translation widget loads a script from a content delivery network and sends the text to be translated, along with your IP address, to external machine-translation services (Microsoft and the translate.js service). It also stores your selected language in a cookie. If you decline, no translation script or cookie is loaded — you can still use your browser’s built-in translation.
  • Web fonts. If enabled, a custom font is loaded from Google Fonts, which transmits your IP address to Google. If you decline, the site uses the fonts already installed on your device.

Pages on this site link to external resources (for example the IAHR website, the Journal of Ecohydraulics, YouTube, and LinkedIn). Those sites have their own privacy policies, which govern any data they collect once you visit them.

Changing your choice

You can change your decision at any time using the “Cookie settings” link in the footer, which re-opens the consent banner.
